Complete Guide to Men's Jewellery in Islam
The history, the ruling, what to wear instead and which finger to wear it on
If you're shopping for a Muslim man, or you are one, you've probably encountered the question: can he actually wear gold? The short answer is no, and it goes back 1,400 years. The full answer is far more interesting and full of great alternatives.
Why Can't Muslim Men Wear Gold?
The prohibition comes directly from authenticated hadith, recorded sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He held up gold in one hand and silk in the other and declared both forbidden for men, while permissible for women.
|
The Hadith "Gold and silk have been permitted for the females of my community and forbidden for its males." — Narrated by Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (Sunan al-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah) |
This ruling is accepted across all four major schools of Islamic jurisprudence, Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali, making it one of the most agreed-upon points in Islamic law. It applies regardless of cultural background.
Does this include rose gold and white gold?
Yes. Rose gold (75% gold + copper) and white gold (gold + palladium or silver) are still gold alloys, same ruling applies. If the metal contains significant gold content, it's not permissible for men.
What about gold-plated jewellery?
Our jewellery uses a stainless steel base with 18k gold plating. The majority scholarly view is that a gold-coloured appearance should be avoided for men. For Muslim men, we always recommend our silver (polished stainless steel) or black IP plated options, both fully permissible, and honestly just as striking.
What Muslim Men Can Wear
The good news: the options are genuinely good. Here's what's permissible:
• Silver: permitted. The Prophet himself wore a silver ring, making it a Sunnah.
• Polished stainless steel: permitted. Resembles silver, contains no gold, confirmed permissible by contemporary scholars.
• Black IP plated stainless steel: permitted. A modern industrial coating with no gold content. Sleek, masculine, and unambiguously allowed.

Did you know? The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) wore a silver signet ring engraved with 'Muhammad, Messenger of Allah'. It was used to seal official correspondence to heads of state. Wearing a silver ring is considered a Sunnah to this day. |
Which Finger Should Muslim Men Wear Rings?
This is where Islamic tradition gives specific guidance. Here's the breakdown:
The pinky: preferred
The most agreed-upon Sunnah is to wear a ring on the little finger (pinky). Most narrations place the Prophet's ring on the pinky of the right hand; some mention the left. Either hand is acceptable, but the pinky finger is consistent across all narrations and is the widely recognised Sunnah choice.
Index and middle fingers: avoid
Some hadith explicitly discourage rings on the index (pointing) and middle fingers. Most scholars advise avoiding these two.
Ring finger: acceptable but not preferred
There's no prohibition on the ring finger, it's simply not the Sunnah finger. Many men choose it out of habit or cultural familiarity, which is fine.

Sizing tip Our rings are adjustable and resizable. The pinky is typically 1–2 sizes smaller than the ring finger, if gifting a ring intended for the little finger, consider sizing down slightly. Contact us for help. |
How to Style Men's Jewellery
Necklaces
Keep it understated. A silver or black name necklace worn close to the collarbone works with everything from a plain tee to a kurta. For occasions, layer it, a name necklace over a longer chain reads effortlessly modern.
Bracelets
One bracelet, worn with intention, is the play. A thick Cuban-link engraved bar on the left wrist, a watch on the right. Clean. Simple. Personal.
Rings
Silver or black, worn on the pinky. Engrave it with a name, a date, or a private message on the inside. Meaningful without being loud, exactly the point.

The ruling on gold for Muslim men is clear, consistent, and centuries old. But it was never meant to leave men without options, the Prophet wore silver, and wore it with meaning. Silver and black jewellery for men isn't second best. It's the original choice.
When it carries a name, engraved in the language of your roots, your faith, your family, it becomes something far more than a bracelet or a ring. It becomes a story worth wearing.
Wear your name. Wear your story.
