Celebrating Navratri

Learn About Hindu Traditions, Garba, and Gujarati Culture

Navratri, a vibrant and energetic festival, is one of the most celebrated events in Hindu culture. It spans nine days of devotion, dance, music, and prayer, dedicated to the Goddess Durga. While widely observed across India, Navratri is especially significant in Gujarat and Maharashtra, and is embraced by many communities worldwide. It's a time when families come together, adorn themselves in colourful attire, and participate in Garba and Dandiya Raas, the rhythmic folk dances that bring the festival to life.

What is Navratri?

Navratri literally means "nine nights" in Sanskrit, where each day is devoted to one form of the Goddess Durga. These nine days symbolise the triumph of good over evil, celebrating the Goddess’s power and divinity. In addition to spiritual reflection, people also express their joy through festivities, including elaborate Garba and Dandiya nights.

The Importance of Colour During Navratri

Each day of Navratri is associated with a specific colour, with people choosing their outfits accordingly. These colours, ranging from deep reds and bright yellows to calming whites and greens, are believed to bring prosperity, health, and peace. Dressing up in these vibrant colours adds to the festive spirit, where tradition blends with fashion. Wearing jewellery that complements the day's colour or resonates with one's cultural roots is a way to further connect with the festival’s essence.

While Navratri is primarily celebrated by Gujarati and Marathi communities, it is embraced by many cultures, both in South Asia and globally. In southern India, it is known as Golu or Bommai Kolu, where homes display artistic figurines. In West Bengal, it is celebrated as Durga Puja, one of the biggest festivals in the state.

Garba and Dandiya: The Dance of Joy

Perhaps one of the most iconic symbols of Navratri is the Garba dance. Originating from Gujarat, Garba is performed in a circular formation around a centrally lit lamp or statue of the Goddess. It’s a dance of devotion, and its circular motion symbolises the eternal cycle of life.

Dandiya Raas, another popular dance, is performed with decorated sticks called dandiyas. The clashing of sticks represents the mock fight between Durga and the demon Mahishasura, ultimately symbolising the victory of good over evil. The music, the foot-tapping rhythms, and the camaraderie among dancers make these nights unforgettable.
