Celebrating South Asian Heritage Month with ArtByZakia
The Essence of South Asian Heritage Month
South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM) is a time to celebrate and recognise the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of South Asians in the UK and beyond. For many, it’s a journey of reconnecting with their roots and proudly showcasing their heritage. At ArtByZakia, we are passionate about helping individuals from South Asian and Middle Eastern backgrounds represent who they are through personalised jewellery and clothing that resonates deeply with their cultural identity.
Founded by Zakia, a proud Punjabi Pakistani, ArtByZakia was born out of a personal journey of cultural rediscovery. Growing up in a predominantly white school, Zakia initially distanced herself from her culture due to bullying. However, as she grew older, she embraced her heritage and developed a deep love for it. Fluent in Urdu, Punjabi, and Arabic, and now learning Gujarati and Tamil, Zakia is committed to helping others fall in love with their culture through everyday jewellery and clothing that blends tradition with modernity. ArtByZakia is now a female South Asian led team, helping others embrace their culture through our prdoucts.
Influential Figures: South Asians Making Waves in the Media
As we celebrate South Asian Heritage Month, it's important to recognize the growing influence of South Asian figures in mainstream media. Celebrities like Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, known for her role in Netflix's Never Have I Ever, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who continues to make waves in Hollywood while staying true to her Indian roots, serve as inspirations. They exemplify how one can navigate Western spaces while proudly representing South Asian culture, much like our customers do when they wear ArtByZakia pieces.
The recent high-profile wedding of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant in India also brought South Asian culture to the global stage, with celebrities like the Kardashians, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, and John Cena experiencing the vibrancy of Indian traditions. Such events highlight the beauty of our heritage and the importance of staying connected to it, no matter where we are in the world.
